In Other News

The other day I came home to an oddly silent apartment.  I stopped to take it all in.  Aha!  The cool of the A/C hadn’t attacked me as I walked into the place and yes, my A/C attacks me with a cool hum that only I can hear!

A few steps away to look at the A/C control – nothing.  And it was warm.  It took about 5 days to get my A/C fixed.  Five very hot days.  In fact – the hottest days of the entire summer up to that point.  The night they finally fixed it, as cool air enveloped me, a thought arrived rather suddenly on my mental door step: “Now all I need is for the washer to break”.  Ahem.  A few hours later I was mopping clear water that was streaming from under my washer.  REALLY THOUGH?

As I type, it has not yet been fixed.  There is a heat wave of magnanimous proportions sweeping across the midwest into the  east and my clothes need to be washed!  Perspiration is not pretty and stinky clothes suck.  Thank God there’s a laundromat up on the corner of the street but still! – the heat is such that I have no desire to leave my house for ANY reason!

I read a bit about it.  Apparently there is a high pressure bowl in the heavens, pressing down on us earthlings, causing all the summer heat to condense down instead of rise up.  The jet stream from the east has just run up the rim of the bowl toward the north, delighting them with sweet, cool air.  Additionally, the sun’s higher elevation and clear skies have also added to the torture.  For a minute or so, two days ago, while walking home from the metro, I found it difficult to breath.  Just from the heat. Yesterday, returning to work from the NIH, I became so hot that when I got into the office, I sat there quietly – energy sapped. Now mind you, it’s all of 1/4 of a mile distance BUT with that heat – KAI!  There was a heat index advisory yesterday until 10pm.

It was 102F/38.8C but with the heat index it actually felt like 121F/49C!!!!  HHHWHAAAT?  Are we in Saudi Arabia?  KAI!  Even when I was down in the Magic City, I don’t recall any days like that!  And when it got hot, for the most part, as the evenings fell if nothing, a nice breeze blew!

In other news, I finally bought another Concordance Bible.  I have been undergoing serious withdrawal for the past 6 months with only The Message.  It is good but it is not a Study/Concordance Bible.  I spent a few hours this morning reading Dr Luke’s Gospel.  I feel the most sympatico from him – given that he was also a doctor, a gentile, interested in the disenfranchised – women, the poor, sinners and focused on presenting the Word in a systematic, analytical and detailed way.  He rocks my socks.

In other news, I got my hair done did.  Very exciting as a professional stylist has not touched my hair in over a year.  Hoping that all the stress of the past few months will have passed away so that my hair doesn’t break off like it did when I moved here.  That was very upsetting.  I was trying to use better and more organic products for my hair – hmmm.  I found that none of the creams gave my hair the moisture it needed.  I just kept watching as more and more of my hair came out.  It’s been a sad 6 months for my hair.  I finally gave up and headed over to the beauty salon for some liquid something – I found it and it has done wonders!

In other news, I’m taking a vacation whether or not August recess is canceled.  I don’t care if folk haven’t gotten a handle on the debt ceiling.  They canceled July recess so they could handle this.  Technically, they have until Aug 2nd to finish it.  They need to handle it.  But whether they handle it or not before Aug 2nd – I’m out.  I refuse to subjugate my vacation time to their willy-nilliness.

In other news, I’m really in love with my glasses.  They cost a ridiculous amount of money but have made me ridiculously happy.  The only other pair of glasses I have ever been in love with were my matrix sunglasses that have sadly been scarred by one too many trips out on the salty ocean.  Aaaargh!

In other news, I’m getting better and better at living a more vegan-centric lifestyle.  Granted, it’s not easy – but at least I’m able to expand my recipes.  Thank God for “Everlasting Life“.  I went there last night for dinner with a friend (her treat).  Yaaay!  I picked up some curried tofu, “salmon” with a nice red sauce, mung bean sprouts (just like thin noodles, delish) and some chickpeas.  I couldn’t finish it all but I got some seconds and some macaroni and cheeze to take home.  Now I have something else to add to my brown rice pasta casserole w/ tofu, stir fried veggies, spinach stew w/ mushrooms and brown rice.  I made some more stir fried veggies today – yummy!

In other news, this post is getting waay too long….
